Ground Larviciding
General: Ground larviciding is a site specific application of an insecticide to a wetland to control mosquitoes in their aquatic stages before they emerge as adult mosquitoes.
Data Base: The District has an extensive data base of larviciding or mosquito breeding sites throughout our service area and a breeding history for each of these sites. From this data base, sites are inspected and treated in accordance with the BMP for each municipality
Site Inspection: Field Technicians collect a minimum of 10 larval dip samples and record their findings on a daily report. The site will be treated as necessary at the discretion of the Field Technician .
Application: When Field Technicians determine that an application is necessary and prudent, Bacillus Thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) is applied by means of hand or power equipment. Bti is a highly selective, naturally occurring, biological larvicide and is non toxic to people, birds, fish, bees, and virtually all other insect species. Bti only effects mosquito larva and a few other closely related aquatic insects in the fly family.
