CATCH BASINS
General: A catch basin application is the application of an insecticide to a catch basin, road side drain, or storm water structure, etc., to control mosquitoes in there aquatic stages before they emerge as adult mosquitoes
Culex mosquitoes are primarily responsible for the amplification of the
West Nile Virus (WNV) cycle in birds and are the primary vectors to humans.
Culex pipiens in particular breed in highly organic or polluted water in
artificial containers such as catch basins, storm water structures, tires,
gutters, and bird baths, etc. The preemptive strategy of treating catch basins
has been effective at reducing the population. Surveillance data show an 80%
reduction in Culex species in communities where basins are treated as
compared to communities with untreated basins.
Catch Basin Applications: Catch basin applications are prioritized in
communities with higher risk of WNV in accordance with the Districts annually
revised Vector Management Plan (VMP). Basin are checked and treated as
necessary.
Insecticide: Because many catch basins are treated annually in risk areas the District is concern with the potential for mosquitoes developing resistance to the products we use. For this reason the District uses three different produces in rotation. They are Vectolex WSP, 5% Skeeter Abate and Altosid Pellets WSP
